Are you allowed to stop a two-coach tram on the rail switch while reversing?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo we see tram points (a switch) built into the roadway - the switch blades and the plates covering the drive mechanism. When reversing a two-coach tram, you are not allowed to stop it on the points - the answer is NO.

Stopping a tram on the points is dangerous: the points may be changed under the tram, and then the bogies of the next coach will go onto a different track and the tram will derail. It also blocks traffic on both tracks beyond the points. When reversing, the tram driver sees the points less well, so they must plan the manoeuvre so that the whole tram stops before the points or beyond them. If you are not sure, stop earlier.

Legal basis: Art. 3 para. 1 and Art. 23 para. 1 point 3 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
