What can you use this switch for?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
A. To switch off the engine.
Explanation
In the photo, there is the right side of a motorcycle's handlebars with a red switch marked with a crossed-out ignition symbol and the letter "C". You use this switch to stop the engine - answer A.
This is the emergency ignition cut-off switch (kill switch): in one position it cuts the ignition and stops the engine, in the other it lets you start it. It is placed by the right-hand grip, under your thumb, so that you can stop the engine without letting go of the handlebars and without looking for the key - after a fall, when the motorcycle is lying on the ground with the engine running, when the throttle grip is stuck, or when smoke is coming out of the engine. Gears are changed with a foot lever on the left side, not with a switch (answer B), and the hazard warning lights - if the motorcycle has them - are switched on with a separate button with a red triangle, usually on the left side of the handlebars (answer C). The Road Traffic Act requires the driver to have control of the vehicle, and quickly cutting the drive in an emergency is part of this skill. Before starting the engine, you check that the switch is in the "run" position, because a motorcycle with the kill switch activated will not respond to the starter.
