What's the maximum speed at which you can ride a motorcycle, once you drive past these signs?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. 140 km/h.
Explanation
In the photo you are driving on a dual carriageway where two signs have been placed on each side of the roadway: at the top D-9 "motorway", and below it D-8 "end of expressway". The expressway is just ending, and the motorway is starting. On a motorcycle you may ride on it at a maximum of 140 km/h - answer B.
The Road Traffic Act states that the speed limit for a motorcycle outside a built-up area is 140 km/h on a motorway and 120 km/h on a dual-carriageway expressway. The Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign D-9 means the beginning or continuation of a motorway, and D-8 the end of an expressway. So beyond these signs motorway rules apply: a limit of 140 km/h for a motorcycle, a passenger car and a lorry up to 3.5 t. The answers 130 and 150 km/h do not match any limit in the Act. Remember that 140 km/h is the upper limit, not a recommendation - in the photo there are roadworks with traffic cones and red-and-white boards, so in reality you ride more slowly, and at full speed a motorcycle needs more than 100 m to stop and a following distance of at least 70 m from the vehicle in front.
