During which of the following manoeuvres are you obliged to keep a distance not less than 1 metres from the vehicle?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
B. Overtaking the bicycle.
Explanation
A distance of not less than 1 metre applies when overtaking a bicycle - answer B. When passing an oncoming car (A) and when passing a stationary vehicle (C), the rules require a safe distance but do not give a figure.
The Road Traffic Act states that when overtaking, the driver exercises particular caution, and in particular keeps a safe distance from the vehicle or road user being overtaken, and when overtaking a bicycle, a cycle cart, a moped, a motorcycle, an electric scooter, a personal transport device (UTO), a person on a mobility aid or a column of pedestrians, this distance may not be less than 1 m. One metre is the minimum on a narrow street; at higher speed a gust of air can make a cyclist wobble, so on a road outside town you leave him much more space.
