In this situation, is the tram driver obliged to reduce the speed and if necessary stop?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video we are driving a tram towards a stop with a pedestrian crossing next to it; on the left there is a bus, and from behind it a pedestrian is walking across the crossing and will soon step onto the tracks in front of the tram. In this situation the tram driver is obliged to reduce speed and, if necessary, stop - the answer is YES.

The Road Traffic Act requires the tram driver, when approaching a pedestrian crossing, to exercise particular caution, to reduce speed so as not to put a pedestrian on the crossing in danger, and to give way to a pedestrian on the crossing. The pedestrian is already on the crossing and is approaching the tracks, so you slow down and stop if necessary. At a stop, pedestrians often run to catch a bus or a tram without looking at the tracks.

Legal basis: Art. 26 para. 1a of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
