Question no. 1824 3 pts basic CC1DD1

You intend to go straight ahead, and the driver of the oncoming vehicle intends to turn left. Are you obliged to yield the right of way to him?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the video, you are driving a lorry towards a junction in town, intending to go straight on; a passenger car is coming from the opposite direction and turning left, crossing your path. You are not required to give way to it. The answer is: no.

The Road Traffic Act states that a driver approaching a junction must exercise particular caution and give way to a vehicle coming from the right, and if the driver is turning left - also to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction going straight on or turning right. There is sign A-7 before the junction, so you must give way to vehicles from the intersecting road, but the oncoming car is on the same minor road as you - between the two of you the general rule applies: it is the driver turning left who gives way to the driver going straight on from the opposite direction, not the other way round. You are going straight on, so you have right of way, and the driver of the passenger car should wait until you have passed. However, right of way does not mean "forcing your way in": in the video the car is already entering your path, so you exercise particular caution and brake if necessary, because a collision with a lorry ends tragically for the passengers of a passenger car.
