When you see this road sign, are you required to stop your vehicle for an approaching cyclist at the crossing?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

The picture shows a blue square sign with the silhouette of a cyclist on a white triangle - D-6a "cycle crossing". When you see this sign, you are not always obliged to stop the vehicle when you see a cyclist approaching the crossing. The answer is: no.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign D-6a marks a place intended for cyclists to ride across the road, and a driver approaching it is obliged to reduce speed so as not to endanger cyclists who are on the crossing or riding onto it. The Road Traffic Act requires you, when approaching a cycle crossing, to exercise particular caution and give way to a cyclist who is on the crossing. Right of way belongs to a cyclist who is already on the crossing, not to everyone who is only approaching it; the Act also does not require stopping, only giving way, which means not making any movement which would force the cyclist to change direction or lane or to change speed significantly. So you stop only when there is no other way to let the cyclist through; for a cyclist who is only riding onto the crossing, the rule on sign D-6a tells you to reduce speed so as not to endanger them.

Legal basis: Art. 27 para. 1 and Art. 2 point 23 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 47 para. 2 and 4 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
