Is it allowed to increase speed to 90 km/h beyond the visible signs?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

B. Yes, because you are exiting a built-up area.

Explanation

In the photo you are driving onto a flyover; on the right there are three signs: D-7 "expressway" with plate T-1a "450 m", E-18a end of the town "Wrocław" and D-43 "end of built-up area". Beyond these signs you may increase your speed to 90 km/h, because you are leaving a built-up area - answer B.

The Regulation on road signs and signals states that sign D-43 marks the exit from a built-up area, and plate T-1a under sign D-7 shows the distance to the start of the expressway. The Road Traffic Act sets the speed limit outside a built-up area at 90 km/h on a two-way single-carriageway road, and at 120 km/h on a dual-carriageway expressway. Since you are passing D-43, the 90 km/h limit applies from this point - and that is why answer B is correct. Answer A is wrong, because you will only enter the expressway in 450 m; the plate announces it but does not start it. Answer C confuses the effect: the fact that the expressway is 450 m further on does not prevent you from speeding up to 90 km/h, which comes from D-43 anyway. The green sign E-18a only informs you that you are leaving the town and does not change the limit itself.

Legal basis: Art. 20 para. 3 point 1 letter b and d of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 58 para. 3, § 48 para. 1, § 50 and § 66 para. 2 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
