Question no. 12605 2 pts basic B

Should you exercise caution in this situation and keep a safe distance from the passing vehicle coming from the opposite direction?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video you are driving on a narrow road through a forest; a red lorry with a semi-trailer is coming from the opposite direction, taking up almost all of its lane. You must be careful and keep a safe distance from the vehicle you are passing. The answer is: yes.

The Road Traffic Act requires a driver passing an oncoming vehicle to keep a safe distance from that vehicle or road user and, if necessary, to move to the right and reduce speed or stop. Passing an oncoming vehicle means driving past a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction; on a narrow forest road a large lorry takes up its lane right up to the centre of the roadway, and its mirrors stick out even further. On top of that, a large vehicle creates a gust of air behind it that can jerk a small car, and stones and mud fly from under its wheels. That is why, before passing, you move to the right edge of the roadway, slow down and hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands; if the road is too narrow to pass each other safely, you stop at the edge and let the lorry go by. You keep your eyes on your lane and the right edge, not on the oncoming vehicle - a car goes where the driver is looking.

Legal basis: Art. 23 para. 1 point 1 and Art. 2 point 26 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
