In this situation, are you obliged to turn right at the nearest intersection?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

NO

Explanation

In the photo you can see a wide road where, in front of a traffic island with an area closed to traffic, there is sign C-9 "keep right of the sign" with a white-and-red board marking an obstacle; further on the right you can see the entry to an intersecting road. You are not obliged to turn right at the nearest junction - the answer is NO.

Sign C-9 only requires you to pass the sign, that is the traffic island, on its right side. It has nothing to do with an obligation to turn right - that is expressed by signs C-1 "turn right before the sign" and C-2 "turn right after the sign" with a curved arrow. Beyond the traffic island you may go straight on or turn in any permitted direction. When going around the traffic island, you do not drive onto the area closed to traffic marked with diagonal stripes, and you keep to your lane.
