Can a moped driver use daytime running lights in deteriorating weather conditions?
Show the correct answer
Correct answer
NO
Explanation
In the video we are driving along a wide street in the city centre, and raindrops can be seen on the windscreen; an articulated bus goes past. In worsening weather conditions, a moped rider may not use daytime running lights instead of dipped headlights - the answer is NO.
Daytime running lights may be used instead of dipped headlights only from dawn to dusk and only in conditions of normal visibility. Rain, fog or snow reduce visibility, and the Road Traffic Act then requires you to exercise particular caution and to switch on the lights your vehicle is equipped with - on a moped these are above all dipped headlights, which also switch on the rear light. Daytime running lights alone are not enough, because in the rain a two-wheeler would be hard to see from behind. Rain also increases braking distance, so you slow down and increase the following distance from the vehicle in front.
Legal basis: Art. 51 para. 1 and 2 and Art. 30 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
