Question no. 10954 2 pts basic AM

Are you obliged, in this situation, to ensure that no other vehicle is approaching from the lane you intend to drive into?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

YES

Explanation

In the video we are driving in the right lane of a wide street in the city centre, and ahead of us a bus is standing at a stop; to continue, we must change to the left lane. In this situation you are obliged to check whether another vehicle is approaching in the lane you want to move into - the answer is YES.

A driver changing lanes is obliged to exercise particular caution and give way to a vehicle travelling in the lane they intend to move into. You cannot do this without checking what is happening in that lane. So you look in the rear-view mirror, and just before the manoeuvre also over your shoulder, because a car, a motorcycle or a bicycle may be in the mirror's blind spot. Only when you are sure that you will not force anyone to brake or change their path do you change lanes smoothly. A two-wheeler is smaller and disappears more quickly from other drivers' field of view, so do not assume that someone will let you in.
