If you are driving an overnormative vehicle with the width exceeding 3,6 m, are you obliged to be piloted by two assisting pilot vehicles?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

A. yes

Explanation

In the photo, a vehicle combination carrying a long, curved bridge girder, pulled by two tractor units, takes up the whole width of a roadway closed to traffic, and people in high-visibility vests are working around it. An abnormal (oversize or overweight) vehicle more than 3.6 m wide must be escorted by two escort vehicles (pilot vehicles) - answer A.

The Regulation on the escorting of abnormal vehicles requires two escort vehicles when the journey exceeds at least one of these values: length 30 m, width 3.6 m, height 4.7 m or actual total mass 80 tonnes. A width of more than 3.6 m means that the combination does not fit in one lane and goes into the adjacent lane, and often into the opposite lane - so one escort vehicle drives in front of the combination and stops oncoming traffic, and the other one closes the column and warns those driving behind. For a width of more than 3.2 m but not more than 3.6 m, one escort vehicle is enough. Answer C adds a time condition that the regulations do not provide for.

Legal basis: § 2 para. 1 and 2 of the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 8 November 2023 on escorting abnormal vehicles; Art. 64 para. 1 point 3 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym)
