Which driving lane should you take in the initial stage when performing a manoeuvre at the left turn shown here?

Show the correct answer

Correct answer

C. Go close to the right edge of the roadway.

Explanation

In the photo, you are driving along a winding road through a forest, and a left bend is starting in front of you; the directions of traffic are separated by a double solid line, and a car is coming from the opposite direction. In the initial phase of taking this bend you should move closer to the right edge of the roadway - answer C. Driving onto the double solid line (A) is prohibited, and moving towards the centre of the roadway (B) brings you closer to oncoming vehicles.

The Road Traffic Act requires you to drive as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway, and the Regulation on road signs and signals states that the double solid line P-4 separates lanes for opposite directions and means that you must not cross it or drive onto it. The technique of "cutting" a left bend by moving towards the centre line comes from the racetrack, where nobody comes from the opposite direction; on a public road, a driver entering the bend from the opposite direction, especially a lorry driver, takes up more space than on a straight road, and your left side next to the centre line is then in the collision zone. The correct way: you slow down on the straight before the bend, keep to the right edge, drive through the curve at a steady speed and only speed up after leaving the bend.

Legal basis: Art. 16 para. 4 of the Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym); § 86 para. 5 of the Regulation on road signs and signals
